Scriptures : Ephesians 6:13-17; Romans 5:2
“Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles (trickery, guile) of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).
The verse 13 begins with “wherefore”, why wherefore? The writer explains we are in a battle (one which we win anyway [Romans 8:37]) and what we are up against; essentially the devil and his cohorts. We need not fear for we must have the armor on, not of man’s production but God’s. The battle is in the spiritual realm and we are all in it without options.
In this battle we wrestle. In wrestling there is no half-time; we wrestle until one character is down and defeated. We have no luxury here.
We will go into details on each of the armor but know that the armor covers all parts but the back of the warrior. Why? Because we are conquerors in Jesus’ name and we do not turn our back to the enemy. Running off leaves you vulnerable in the back parts and hence your demise. This is the reason why we are required “to stand”. However we stand matters, whether withstanding or standing off the enemies, we cannot afford to fall. We have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb of God.
Where do we stand? Romans 5:2 tells us we stand in grace, “By whom we have access by faith into this grace WHEREIN WE STAND. 1 Peter 5:12 confirms it by saying, “…that is the true grace of God wherein ye stand”. We therefore fight on grace fields, Christ our solid rock.
Our medium of battle is prayer. Prayer is an expression of grace not law and in the next chapters we will elaborate on the various accoutrements of the armour.
Prayer: Dear Father, help me by this study to fully utilize the armor you have provided for me to stand against the offenses of the enemy, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
