Scripture reference: Ephesians 5:8; Colossians 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:5; 1 Peter 2:9
“For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Lord”, “Who has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear son”.
How does one who once lived in the depths of sin now live in holiness effortlessly? Our opening verse says we were once darkness. The writer, by the Holy Ghost, did not say, we were once in darkness but we were the embodiment of darkness itself. We could do no “light” thing by ourselves. Our whole nature was sin; even our good deeds we did were birthed out of the same nature.
God is light and in Him is no darkness at all yet He loved us in our estate so much that He could not leave us there. Like a man marries a woman he loves so much and lives with her, God, by his love, made a way to save us. How? By the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that whosoever believes in him should not perish neither should he remain in sin and darkness but be instantaneously translated from pure darkness into light (the wonder and the nature of God) at the confession of his/her faith in the perfect finished work of Jesus.
Now, we are no longer people trying to do good, our very nature is become good; kindness, greatness, success, etc. is our being and we exude those attributes. Only the spell of God could effect this change. That is why we had the word “Gospel” thus “God’s spell” because a man is changed completely thereby.
Beloved, let us therefore not emulate darkness, which is against our nature, for we are now lights; lights of the world. Go forth shinning His grace!
