“These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and CONTRITE IN SPIRIT, and who tremble at my word.”Isaiah 66:2b
Today brings us another exciting counsel from the Word; the humility in being contrite in Spirit.
The Word contrite can be understood simply as to be thoroughly bruised or broken unto something. It’s in this light that we are being admonished this morning to have and carry along a Spirit that is broken, hence contrite unto our Lord.
To be broken in Spirit means you sincerely feel responsible for your actions and always apologetic in times you notice your actions are/were not right. These are the ones God is talking about today, not people who find it difficult to admit and accept some wrongs came about because of their own actions.
It is important we have this Spirit and nature in ourselves as believers because we serve a God whom we can’t hide anything from. It will be much of a deceit to ourselves if we think we can ‘play’ God.
The man who was after God’s own heart said something In Psalm 139:1-4, David brought our attention to the kind of God we serve, the all-powerful and all- knowing everlasting God, who knows and perceives even the thoughts of man.
With this in mind, what manner of life must we live – a life of meekness and brokenness in our Spirit with regards to our relationship with God. This, He esteems and will not despise.
No wonder Bible says in Jeremiah 17:10 – “I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”
If there is something you are sure to present to God without Him rejecting, it is your brokenness.
Psalms 51:17 says My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
We know that even well when we run through the character of David, for the many times he wronged God, he still remained the man after God’s heart because he was sincere to the core and presented situations just as they were to God. Also he took responsibility of all his actions, even those he wasn’t aware once he is brought to the knowledge of it.
Receive Grace to remain broken and meek in your relationship with the Lord in Jesus name!
